ABOUT PADDLE BOARDING

It's like yoga on water. Wow! An exciting new sport called stand up Paddle Boarding has emerged as THE sport for celebrities and everyday fitness enthusiasts alike. It’s fun and as a bonus, it's a great fitness program. Celebrities like Jennifer Anniston, Matthew McConaughey and Pierce Brosnan have been caught-on-tape practicing this new sport while grinning from ear to ear.  It is a growing trend still its infancy, but expected to hit critical mass within the next couple of years. The sport is rapidly gaining momentum and has become a complimentary sport for surfers. It's origin is believed to have come from Polynesia and  later popularized in Hawaii. I'm not sure about all that, but I do feel a little tribal when I'm doing it! The beauty of this sport is that even when the waves are small, paddle boarding is still a whole lot of fun. Since the boards are longer and wider than surf boards you can surf large and small waves alike - for a much longer ride. This Hawaiian craze can be practiced on flat water, rivers and streams, or on the ocean. As you slowly paddle along, gazing at all your surroundings, you can’t help but sense a feeling of “being”, while all the muscles in your body are worked - especially your core. Paddle Boarding is not only a complete fitness program but a relaxing and fulfilling outdoor activity that can be enjoyed regardless of whether you are 7 or 70 years old! Try it; you will fall in love within the first 5 minutes!

HISTORY

Stand Up Paddle Surfing/Boarding

Stand Up Paddle, (SUP), is an emerging global sport with a Hawaiian heritage. It can be traced back to the early days of Polynesia. The sport is ancient form of surfing and began as a way for surfing instructors to manage their large groups of learner surfers as standing on the board gave them a higher view point increasing visibility of what was going on around them such as incoming swell. To begin with, this started with using a one bladed paddle standing on a normal length surfboard. The popularity of the modern sport of SUP has its origination in the Hawaiian Islands. In the early 1960s the Beach Boys of Waikiki would stand on their long boards and paddle out with outrigger paddles to take pictures of the tourists learning to surf. This is where the term "Beach Boy Surfing" originates, another name for Stand Up Paddle Surfing.

Today SUP, or Stand-Up-Paddle, is gaining popularity as the demands for global-conscious green sports increase. Additionally the sport benefits athletes with a strong 'core' workout. SUP'ing is popular at warm coastal climates and resorts, and is gaining in popularity as celebrities are sampling the sport and cross-over athletes are training with SUP. SUPs have been spotted around the globe anywhere there is easy access to safe waters as well as in the surfing lineups of the world.

The first "modern" surfer to bring Stand Up Paddle Surfing out of Hawaii and onto mainland USA was Vietnam veteran Rick Thomas. In 2000 Rick, on a 11ft Muñoz board and with a Leleo Kinimaka paddle, introduced California to the new sport.

Surfers have converted because of the versitilty of the new sport. Stand up paddle boarding offers surfs the ability to catch more waves in a set, as well as offers a better view of incoming sets.

Most new custom SUP board prices range from $900 to $1500 new, and most consist of composite epoxy construction. The boards are generally longer than 9 feet and up to 12 feet in length with features such as padded decks, concave hulls, and generally have 1 or 3 surfboard style fins in the stern for stability. The evolution of longboard, shortboard, and paddleboard designs has culminated in the development of today's SUP surfboards. As we review history, the traditional surf board designs of 50/50 rails and single fin setups had evolved into smaller, lighter, and faster surfboards. Now, with the materials available today, and new composite construction techniques, shapers are pushing the existing limits of weight, strength, and shape of SUP surfboards thus leading to a higher level of performance amongst SUP surfers.
